Let's Move!

Making Healthy Family Choices

left image

Last month, First Lady Michelle Obama launched a nationwide initiative aimed at solving childhood obesity within a generation. That's a big order. But one that is certainly attainable. We have all heard publicly about Mrs. Obama's frequent trips for fast food and pizza deliveries. It's hard to make healthy choices when a busy family is too busy to cook healthy meals. When their pediatrician suggested she take a closer look at what her family was eating, things changed. Healthier choices happened. These lessons she learned led to Let's Move.

Obesity rates have tripled in the past 30 years. No longer are kids getting the physical activity they need. And for the first time, American children may have a shorter lifespan than their parents. Wow. This news is startling, but not surprising. Computers, television, Xbox and others, have all contributed to a more stationary lifestyle.

Let's Move focuses on four main areas: making healthier choices, improving the quality of food in our schools, increased physical education for our children, and having access to healthier, affordable food. It's all about empowering us parents with the tools we need to make informed choices. Healthy living starts in the home. As Mrs. Obama states, short, easy changes can lead to good results.

Spending time outside seems like a great way for families to get active and get moving! From going to playgrounds in your community to participating in one of the many nature walks happening around town to belonging to a local gym with family-friendly activities - there is something for everyone. The best piece of advice? Move it! Oh, and check out my calendar for lots of fun events happening in San Diego.

See you around San Diego!

Barbie in a Mermaid's Tale

A review by KIDS FIRST!

left image

In the delightful DVD, Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale, from Universal Studios Home Video, Barbie stars as Merliah, a surfing champion from Malibu. One minute she's a normal teenager and the next she learns a shocking family secret: she's a mermaid! Merliah and her dolphin friend Zuma set off on an undersea adventure to rescue her mother, the queen of Oceana. With help from her new mermaid friends, Merliah saves the ocean kingdom. In the end, she discovers what makes you different can also be your greatest strength.

This latest release of Barbie movies features a very self-sufficient and hip Surfer, Merliah who discovers that her mother is a mermaid and she is in danger somewhere deep under the sea in a place called Oceana. When Merliah takes off to rescue her mother, she has no idea that she is a princess, destined to become queen of Oceana should any harm come to her mother. She is young and innocent, immediately befriended by the local teen mermaids who expose her to their magical kingdom under the sea - complete with fashion boutiques and other accoutrements not unlike what teens find above the sea. This video will appeal to any preteen who is attuned to fashion, the environment or behaving heroically - if only in your imagination. KIDS FIRST! Juror Comments: I love the shots of Merliah surfing and the underwater landscapes and critters. They're imaginative. Fish as paparazzi! Calissa's evil sister, Erris, is suitably evil but won't give anyone nightmares. The music is upbeat, original and very danceable. Fun story, easy to watch. DVD 88 min.; $19.98; Age: 5-8.

Find this DVD in stores March 9, or enter the March Sweepstakes at KIDS FIRST! for a chance to win a free copy of “Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale.”

Tortoises on the Move

At the San Diego Zoo

top image

My family is a big fan of turtles and tortoises. We have them... plenty of them. Each with their own distinct personalities. One of the exhibits we always check out at the San Diego Zoo is the Galápagos tortoises. It's one of our favorites.

You don't think of tortoises "chasing" after anything. But, I will tell you, they can move when they want to! Galápagos tortoise No. 5, nicknamed Speedy and estimated to be between 110 and 130 years old, was chasing after vegetables at the San Diego Zoo on Monday. It was quite a sight as zookeepers lured Speedy and 16 other tortoises, weighing between 400 to 600 pounds, onto a trailer by using yams to entice them out of their old home, a place some of the tortoises have known since arriving at the San Diego Zoo in 1928. The exhibit is being remodeled leaving the old-timers out of public view for the first time in decades.

"The Galápagos tortoise has a long history at the San Diego Zoo and has been viewed and enjoyed by tens of millions of visitors. It is not uncommon to be stopped by a guest who tells you 'I remember when I was a kid and came to the Zoo and saw the Galápagos tortoise,'" said Donal Boyer, San Diego Zoo curator of herpetology. "The tortoises will be missed, but they will be back this summer."

The tortoises will return in the summer after a renovation to the exhibit that includes a new barn, rockwork, landscaping and an interactive zone where Zoo guests will be able to touch the giant tortoises under zookeeper supervision.

I'll be there!

Macaroni Safety

Buckle Up!

left image
According to California Highway Patrol, California law states that children must be properly restrained in an appropriate child passenger restraint system in the rear seat of a motor vehicle (safety seat or booster seat) until they are at least six years of age or weigh at least 60 pounds. In November, 2009, New York State law changed making it mandatory for children under the age of 8 to be in a proper child safety restraint system. Most parents believe that installing a car seat is simple, but there are far more things to think to about than just making sure the latch belt is tight. It is estimated that 75% of all child car seats are installed incorrectly or used improperly. Here are a few important things to think about when installing your child’s restraint.

The child seat should not move more than 1” side to side at the base, the area where the seat bottom meets the seat back. Using the latch system and seat belt does not provide extra protection. Studies show that one or the other is sufficient.  Utilizing a device such as the Mightytite® may make your car seat snug, but it actually stretches the seat belt and studies have been shown these to cause seat belts to break in an accident making your car seat, and child, a projectile.

To get more information on child passenger safety, go to www.safekids.org. To have your child’s seat inspected, you can contact Safe Kids San Diego (858.576.1700 or mbmoran@rchsd.org) to see when the next scheduled Car Seat Check-Up Event will be. In addition, the Auto Club also has periodic child safety seat inspection events. I often forget about all the services Auto Club has. This is just one of many. You can also go to www.seatcheck.org to find a child safety seat inspection station near you. Just put in your zip code and a list of inspection stations near you will pop up.

Macaroni Made

Sun Catcher

right image

While this frozen sun catcher won't last as long in San Diego as it would in New Jersey, it is fun to make nonetheless!

Make color ice cubes by adding 1-2 drops of food coloring to the water in each section of a ice cube tray.  The colors will run together in the pan later so use complimentary colors.  Freeze the ice cubes completely.

Fill a round cake pound about 2/3 full with water.  To make a hole for a ribbon, set a plastic cup full of water in the pan.  Place the pan in the freezer for about an hour.  Put the colored ice cubes in the pan and let all the liquid freeze completely.

Remove the plastic cup, flip the frozen sun catcher out of the pan and hang from a tree branch with a ribbon.

Brought to you by our very own Hillsborough, NJ PM!

Camp Tip

Home Sick

right image
Your child may ask you to take him home or come and pick him up at some point during their summer camp experience.

They may want to come home after a few days simply because they miss the comfort of home and family. It could be that they want to come home because of a unpleasant social incident or that they have not yet bonded with one of the other campers. Encourage her to talk about what's going well at camp, and ask her to "hang in there" for a couple of days and make contact with the counselors.

Intensity and frequency in your child's homesickness is what should determine whether you bring them home or not.  Some warning signs:

Isolating themselves and avoiding contact with their peers.

Consistently declining invitations from staff and fellow campers to participate in activities.

Daily talk about running away or wanting to go home.

No positive responses to counselors' attempts to help her form friendships or participate in camp activities.

If a camp director calls to ask you to take your child home, it is because believe that they have exhausted their efforts to make this a good experience for your child. If you receive such a call, it's time to bring your child home.

If you do bring your child home from camp, don't shame them as they are already dealing with guilt and embarrassment about leaving camp. Let them know you understand why she didn't like camp, emphasizing that camp isn't an experience that all kids enjoy.

Start soliciting ideas from them and offering your own suggestions as to how they can enjoy the remainder of their summer vacation.

Both of you need to remember that there's life beyond summer camp.

Sene Africa

A Shout Out to the band!

left image
My daughter made her stage debut at a recent Sene Africa concert. We knew that sitting in the front or on an aisle brought about the possibility for getting dragged onto stage, but I was just happy to be there with my 2 year old and her Dada. Sene Africa consists of a kora player, an acoustic guitar player and this concert also had a dynamic djembe player. The mix of the three instruments, plus their voices, was amazing. When the kora player came to us and grabbed my daughter so that I would follow him onto stage, well, I followed. I soon had to bust a move and actually had fun doing it. Amadou Fall was born in Dakar, Senegal and began playing the 21 string kora at age 11. Born outside of Dakar, Senegal, singer/guitarist Abrahima Ba has performed for such well-known musicians as Baaba Mall. Now based in San Diego, Sene Africa plays around town frequently. You can check out their My Space page at www.myspace.com/seneafrica.

Bob the Builder: Heavy Duty Diggers

A Review by KIDS FIRST!

right image

Learn how to face your fears and embrace your talents in this empowering collection of “Bob the Builder” episodes. Bob and his gang take you step-by-step through the building process, showing that it takes careful planning and lots of teamwork to get the job done. In the five animated episodes Scrap learns that observing others can help him work better in the long run; Lofty learns that water won’t hurt him; Roley learns that it’s better to work as a team and that his ideas aren’t necessarily the best ideas; Scoop learns that builders can be artists and being an artist doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to paint; and Lofty learns to face his fears with his eyes wide open and discovers that doing so gives him the understanding that there was nothing to be afraid of after all. This title assists children in working through problems or emotional issues and promotes service to and compassion for others.

KIDS FIRST! Child Juror Comments: I liked this movie because it tells you not to be afraid because there’s no such thing as monsters. It looks really good because they don’t mess up the cartoon. They are nice to each other. When one machine wants to build something, the other machines tell him to watch and learn, and they are nice to him. My favorite part is when Lofty thinks that the water makes it so that you fall apart if it touches you -  so he was afraid of it. He went into the water by accident and learned that if you go into the water, you don’t fall apart. I think my friends would like this because they like big machines. DVD. 46 min.; $14.98; Ages 2-5. Lionsgate/HIT Entertainment. ASIN: B00344EAGY
